The City of Aarhus has a series of ambitious growth targets: By 2030 we will have 75,000 more citizens, 50,000 new jobs, 50,000 new dwellings and 12,000 more students. One of the many initiatives introduced to achieve these goals is a holistic effort to brand the city – vis-à-vis international employees, students, businesses and tourists.

The main communication platforms for the City of Aarhus are its website and the intranet. The focus on the website is to ensure full accessibility in relation to the requirements of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG2) and to support digitalisation by supporting citizens and businesses using self-service solutions and easy-to-read service information. Additionally, the website also provides a platform for city branding.
Involving citizens in the political process
Involving citizens in the democratic processes is a key element in the City of Aarhus’ IT strategy, and the City of Aarhus has positive experience with online debates; for example, a platform for discussing traffic-related issues in Aarhus with extensive up-to-date news, different proposals for plans in the form of maps etc., questionnaires and a discussion forum.

All municipal departments have their respective communication units, ensuring that all communication is carefully tailored to the citizens needs.
The communication team in the Mayor’s Department handles a number of corporate communication tasks such as branding projects, the website, intranet, design lines and communication policies. Intra-municipal development is coordinated by the Communication Department’s steering committee.
