Public Libraries
The public libraries in Aarhus are developing rapidly, and the new Dokk 1 – Urban Media Space complex opened its doors to the public in 2015. The libraries in the City of Aarhus are being transformed into community centres that embrace far more than the traditional lending of books. The libraries in Aarhus are internationally recognised for involving users in developing the services on offer. Read more about Public Libraries in Aarhus.
Information, education and culture
The libraries are obliged by law to promote education and cultural activities, among other things by making media available to the public in printed and digital formats. The libraries organise more than 1,000 events every year, ranging from reading and discussion events with writers, children’s theatre, exhibitions and debates.
The library as a community centre
The local libraries provide citizens’ services and courses in digital citizenship to the public. In June 2015, the City of Aarhus opened a brand new state-of-the-art main library, Dokk1. A total of 18 local libraries are found within the municipal boundary. The services offered by the libraries and by Citizens’ Services are often combined with events created by different partners, for example various NGOs, educational institutions, Aarhus University, associations and volunteers.
