In 2017, Aarhus was the European Capital of Culture with the main theme ‘RETHINK’.
Sport and leisure
Denmark has a long-standing tradition for popular involvement in leisure, but Aarhus is also Denmark’s number one city for sporting events. With its many activities and initiatives – from those organised by local associations to major international elite-level sporting events – the Department of Sport and Leisure is putting Aarhus on the map with major sporting events. Public Libraries
The public libraries in Aarhus are developing rapidly, and the new Dokk 1 – Urban Media Space complex opened its doors to the public in 2015. The libraries in the City of Aarhus are being transformed into community centres that embrace far more than the traditional lending of books.
